In a heartwarming celebration, family and friends gathered at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia, to honour Susie Dotson on her 100th birthday. The Heritage Hall room was filled with laughter, smiles, and tears of joy as loved ones reflected on the remarkable life of this centenarian.
Born on July Fourth, 1924, in Cusseta, Georgia, Susie Dotson moved to Columbus in 1975. She is the sole surviving sibling out of twenty, a fact that she attributes to her kindness and generosity. “I wondered a lot of times, why me? Why, why me? I guess it might have come from being good to everybody and being kind and sweet,” Dotson shared.
Despite losing her sight a few months ago, Dotson remains positive and full of love. Before losing her sight completely, she only had vision in one eye, but this did not deter her spirit. Surrounded by family and friends at her birthday celebration, she greeted everyone with hugs and laughter. “I love people, and I love to be around them. I love to laugh with them. I can’t see nobody, but you can say things to make me feel good or make me tickled, make me laugh. I laugh a lot,” Dotson expressed.
Her grandson, Charles Thornton, who she raised from a young age, organised the celebration in honour of the woman who helped shape him into the person he is today. “She’s very colourful, very funny. You know, she has no filter saying what she wants to say. But she has a great heart. She’ll give you the shirt off her back. She’s been a great mom to me, and she actually made me who I am today,” Thornton shared.

Dotson had a word of wisdom to share on living a long and fulfilling life. “I think we all should get together and love each other. I think we should not hate each other. I think we should just go on and smile and keep in touch with each other,” she advised.
As the festivities came to an end, it was clear that Susie Dotson’s legacy of love, kindness, and laughter will continue to inspire those around her for years to come.
