The Park County, Wyoming coroner has identified a 28-year-old man from Milton, Florida as the individual who was shot and killed in Yellowstone National Park on July 4. The victim, Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, died following an armed altercation with at least one Yellowstone National Park ranger.

Coroner Cody Gortmaker stated that Fussner was an employee within the park, with local Wyoming media outlets, including Cowboy State Daily, sharing a photo of Fussner’s Xanterra employee ID badge. Xanterra is a private company that operates concessions in various national parks, including Yellowstone and Glacier.

The FBI is currently leading the investigation into the shooting, which took place in the early hours of Independence Day. Park officials disclosed that rangers were responding to reports of a person making threats with a firearm at Canyon Village.

According to a press release from the Yellowstone National Park public affairs office, rangers arrived at the scene late on the evening of July 3. The confrontation continued into the early hours of July 4, leading to gunfire being exchanged between the rangers and Fussner, resulting in his death and an injury to one of the park rangers.

The injured ranger was promptly transported to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. Canyon Village, situated in the central part of Yellowstone National Park, offers a range of accommodation options, including motel rooms, cabins, and over 200 campsites.

Most of the lodging facilities, shops, and food services in the vicinity of Canyon Village are operated by Xanterra. Since 2010, federal law has permitted the carrying of firearms in national parks. However, firearms are prohibited in all National Park Service facilities, which encompass most buildings within the park.

While firearms are allowed within the park, discharging a weapon is strictly prohibited. This provision allowing firearms without the consent for their use is intended to facilitate travel between towns within the park for lawful firearm owners.
