The recent tragic incident at Yellowstone National Park involving a contract worker who injured a park ranger and was subsequently killed in a shootout has taken a dark turn with new revelations. According to a recording of a be-on-the-lookout (BOLO) notice aired on the Park County dispatch system on Independence Day, the suspect allegedly held a female hostage at gunpoint before his death.
Park County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Monte McClain confirmed the authenticity of the recording, which detailed the events leading up to the fatal confrontation. The gunman, identified as Samson Lucas Bariah Fussner, 28, who was an employee of Xanterra, a company operating within Yellowstone National Park, had reportedly threatened to shoot up a fireworks show in West Yellowstone, Montana.
The dispatcher in the recording mentioned that Fussner was armed with a pistol and possibly other weapons, as well as a knife. Authorities were on high alert for Fussner leaving the park in a silver Nissan Rogue with Florida license plates, but he remained in the Canyon Village area where the incident began.
Escalation and Tragic Outcome
The incident unfolded overnight on Wednesday and culminated in a shootout the following morning, resulting in Fussner’s death and a park ranger being injured. Witnesses camping in Canyon Village reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing park rangers rushing to the scene, with one couple estimating around 100 shots fired.

Following the gunfire, authorities issued a cellphone ping to reassure guests that the danger had passed, but the ranger remained in stable condition. Yellowstone National Park has yet to provide further updates on the situation.
Evacuation and Investigation
In the aftermath of the incident, lodges and campgrounds in the Canyon Village area were evacuated, with new guests being turned away. The tense atmosphere was heightened by the presence of federal agents occupying many rooms, leading to disruptions in accommodation and dining services.
Guests were treated to a complimentary buffet dinner as food accommodations were restricted for the investigation. However, some travellers reported being turned away without adequate explanation, with one guest receiving a notice from Xanterra promising reimbursement for up to $300 in lodging costs.
As the FBI continues its investigation into the tragic events at Yellowstone National Park, the community remains shaken by the shocking turn of events. The full extent of the impact of this incident is yet to be determined, but the authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and security of all visitors to the park.
