ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – A tragic incident unfolded in Elkhart County, Indiana, as a 2-year-old boy was found dead and a 37-year-old man, identified as Ryan Snyder, is now in custody following an intense standoff that lasted over 18 hours, according to authorities.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 9:05 p.m. on Saturday, prompting them to check the welfare of a man and his two children in Baugo Township.

Despite their efforts to make contact with the man, deputies were unsuccessful. It was later revealed that the man was armed and had made threats to harm his children and law enforcement.

SWAT Standoff

Elkhart County Regional SWAT was called to the scene around 12:10 a.m. on Sunday after the man barricaded himself inside the house and fired his weapon multiple times towards law enforcement. Indiana State Police SWAT later took over negotiations.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Ted Bohner stated, “We basically went into a holding pattern of having our negotiators here attempting to make contact throughout the morning, noon and even into the afternoon hours attempting to make contact with the suspect so we could talk to him and come to a peaceful resolution to this whole event.”

Arrest and Tragic Discovery

After numerous unsuccessful negotiation attempts, the state police SWAT team entered the home around 3:30 p.m. and successfully apprehended Snyder. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Elkhart County Jail.

Tragically, a 2-year-old boy was found deceased inside the residence. Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Fortunately, the man’s other child, a 4-year-old girl, is physically unharmed despite the traumatic events. She received medical attention at the scene and was later released to a relative.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Indiana State Police and the Elkhart County Homicide Unit are currently leading the investigation into the incident. The Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office will determine the charges to be brought against Snyder.

While no additional injuries were reported, Sgt. Bohner acknowledged the emotional toll the standoff took on law enforcement officials who worked tirelessly to resolve the situation peacefully.
