A devastating incident took place in Elkhart County recently, resulting in the death of a 2-year-old boy and the arrest of a 37-year-old man on suspicion of murder. The incident led to a lengthy standoff that lasted over 18 hours, as reported by WNDU-TV.

Initial Response by Authorities

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 9:05 p.m. on Saturday to check on the welfare of Ryan Snyder and his two children at a residence in the 57000 block of Pendleton Drive in Baugo Township. The situation escalated when Snyder, armed with a weapon, refused to cooperate with law enforcement and fired shots towards the police officers outside the house.

SWAT Intervention and Negotiations

Elkhart County Regional SWAT was summoned to the scene, followed by the Indiana State Police SWAT team when negotiations with Snyder proved unsuccessful. After hours of tense standoff, the ISP SWAT team managed to enter the house at around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday and apprehend Snyder. He was then taken to the hospital for medical evaluation before being placed in custody at the Elkhart County Jail.

Tragic Discovery

Tragically, authorities discovered the lifeless body of a 2-year-old boy inside the residence. Sources indicate that the deceased child was Snyder’s son. The cause of the boy’s death is currently under investigation. Fortunately, the other child, a 4-year-old girl, was treated at the scene and later released to a relative.
