An Elkhart County resident was apprehended on Sunday following a lengthy 18-hour standoff with law enforcement officers, as reported by the Indiana State Police.

The incident unfolded on Saturday when deputies from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence situated in the 57000 block of Pendleton Drive. The purpose of the visit was to conduct a welfare check on an adult male and his two young children. Upon their arrival at 9:06 p.m., deputies were unable to establish communication with the man, who was reportedly armed and had made threatening statements towards his children and law enforcement personnel.

By 12:09 a.m. on Sunday, the Elkhart County Regional Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team were summoned to the scene in an effort to make contact with the individual. Despite repeated attempts to engage him, the man refused to vacate the premises and discharged a firearm before barricading himself inside the residence. Recognising the escalating situation, the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team was called in to assume control of the operation on Sunday morning.

Throughout the course of Sunday, multiple strategies were employed to communicate with the suspect, but with limited success. Finally, at 3:30 p.m., the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team executed a successful entry into the property and took 37-year-old Ryan Snyder into custody. Tragically, a 2-year-old boy was discovered deceased within the residence, while a 4-year-old girl was found alive and subsequently attended to at the scene before being entrusted to a family member.
