The Maharashtra Police have taken Rajesh Shah, a prominent figure in the Shiv Sena faction led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, into custody for non-cooperation following a tragic incident in Mumbai. The incident involved Shah’s 24-year-old son, Mihir Shah, who allegedly crashed his BMW car into a bike, resulting in the death of a woman in Worli, as reported by NDTV.
In addition to Rajesh Shah, the family driver, Rajendrasingh Bisawat, who was reportedly present in the car at the time of the accident, has also been detained by the police.
Mihir Shah, who is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, is currently evading authorities. The police have issued a lookout circular for him, expressing concerns that he may attempt to flee the country to evade arrest, as per The Indian Express.
Legal Ramifications and Victim’s Identity
Authorities have filed charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, reckless driving, and tampering with evidence, among other offences under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Mihir Shah. Additionally, the Motor Vehicles Act has been invoked in the case.

The victim, identified as Kaveri Nakhwa, hailed from Worli Koliwada, a coastal settlement on the periphery of the affluent South Mumbai neighbourhood. Following the collision, she was dragged along the car’s bonnet for approximately 100 metres. Her husband, Pradeep Nakhava, who also sustained injuries in the incident, is presently receiving medical treatment.
Political Response and Calls for Justice
Eknath Shinde has assured that stringent measures will be taken in response to the situation. In a statement to ANI on Sunday, Shinde affirmed, “Whoever is found guilty, appropriate action will be taken against them. We uphold equality before the law and will enforce strict penalties in accordance with legal provisions.”
Aaditya Thackeray, a key figure in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction, visited the victim’s husband to offer support. In a social media post, Thackeray refrained from commenting on Shah’s political affiliation, urging the police to swiftly apprehend the suspect and ensure justice prevails. He emphasised the necessity for the legal system to operate without political interference.
The incident has sparked widespread outcry and demands for accountability, with many calling for justice to be served without any bias or favouritism.
