In late June, the small town of Sharon, Pennsylvania was rocked by the news of a missing person report that ultimately led to the discovery of human remains. The victim was identified as Pauly A. Likens Jr., a 14-year-old transgender female resident of the town. State police have charged a 29-year-old Sharon resident, DaShawn Watkins, in connection with Pauly’s death. Watkins is alleged to have met Pauly through the Grindr app, a popular LGBTQ dating platform.

The Shenango Valley LGBTQIA+ Alliance, a local advocacy group, has stepped up to provide support to Pauly’s family during this difficult time. The alliance, which had recently secured its own office space in Sharon, has mobilized efforts to ensure justice for Pauly and to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in Mercer County.

Mobilizing Support for Pauly and Her Family

As news of Pauly’s tragic death spread, the Shenango Valley LGBTQIA+ Alliance received an outpouring of support from the community. Pam Ladner, the alliance’s president, described the response as overwhelming and heartwarming. LGBTQ organizations from neighbouring cities like Erie and Pittsburgh have offered their solidarity and assistance to the alliance as they navigate this difficult time.

The alliance has organized a candlelight vigil in honour of Pauly, scheduled for July 13 at their office on Stambaugh Ave. The event aims to bring the community together to remember Pauly and show support for her family. Additionally, a GoFundMe account has been set up to help Pauly’s family with expenses.

Investigation Details Unfold

The investigation into Pauly’s disappearance and murder revealed a timeline of events that led to Watkins’ arrest. Police used surveillance footage, cellphone records, and forensic evidence to piece together the events leading up to Pauly’s death. Watkins, who is currently in custody without bond, faces charges of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, Watkins allegedly met Pauly through the Grindr app and engaged in sexual contact with her before her death. The investigation also uncovered evidence of blood in Watkins’ apartment, as well as a receipt for the purchase of a saw that was consistent with the type of cutting instrument used in the dismemberment of Pauly’s remains.

Community Impact and Advocacy

Pam Ladner, reflecting on the tragic loss of Pauly, highlighted the importance of advocacy and support for the LGBTQ community in Mercer County. The Shenango Valley LGBTQIA+ Alliance was founded out of a need for visibility and resources for LGBTQ individuals in the area. Pauly’s death has underscored the ongoing challenges faced by the community and the need for continued advocacy and support.

As the investigation into Pauly’s death continues, the community of Sharon remains united in their support for Pauly’s family and in their commitment to seeking justice for her. The candlelight vigil organized by the alliance is just one of many ways in which the community is coming together to honour Pauly’s memory and ensure that her story is not forgotten.
