Accident – Death – Obituary News : Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of a devotee during the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra procession in Puri on June 7. Lalitha Bagarti, a devotee from Saitala block in Balangir district, lost her life in the crowd during the procession. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) released a statement conveying Majhi’s condolences to the bereaved family.

In response to the unfortunate incident, Chief Minister Majhi has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh as ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased devotee. Additionally, he has assured free medical treatment for those who were injured during the chariot pulling event in Puri.

The tragic incident occurred when a devotee suffocated during the pulling of Lord Balabhadra’s Taladhwaja chariot at the Rath Yatra in Puri. Despite immediate medical attention, the devotee was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Reports indicate that several others were injured in a stampede-like situation during the festival.

President Droupadi Murmu, along with Odisha Governor Raghubar Das, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, participated in the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri. This festival is a significant and eagerly awaited event in India, drawing a large number of devotees from across the country to seek blessings from Lord Jagannath.

The Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, holds immense cultural and religious significance. It is believed to be as old as the Jagannath Temple in Puri and is associated with Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, and his siblings. During the Yatra, the deities are carried on wooden chariots from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple in Puri.
