EUREKA (25News Now) – A recent survey conducted in Eureka revealed that a staggering 85% of participants personally knew someone in the local community who is battling some form of dementia.

In response to this pressing need for support and awareness, a new nonprofit organization titled ‘Dementia Friendly Eureka’ is set to launch in August. The primary objective of this initiative is to offer enhanced assistance and resources to individuals affected by dementia.

One of the key components of the program is the provision of specialized training sessions for local businesses and community members. These training sessions aim to educate participants on how to identify signs of dementia and provide appropriate assistance to those in need.

Lead Coordinator Autum Jones highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “Our group will help navigate and point those people to the necessary services when they encounter individuals struggling with dementia in everyday situations, such as at the grocery store or a local bank.”

A total of 21 community leaders from various institutions including Carle Eureka Hospital, Woodford County, and the City of Eureka are actively involved in the implementation of this groundbreaking plan.

Moreover, the initiative includes the development of a comprehensive resource guide that features information on dementia-friendly businesses within the community.

To further enhance safety measures, the Woodford County Emergency Management Agency has announced the distribution of free Care Trak bracelets. These bracelets serve as a vital tool in locating individuals with dementia in case they go missing or wander off.

Ben Wagner, the Chief Care Trak Officer at the county EMA, emphasized the significance of this tool, stating, “Knowing that we have this resource available in our county provides reassurance that we can swiftly locate and bring individuals with dementia back to safety.”

For Mike Sarver, who has been diagnosed with a form of dementia, and his wife Kelly Crawford-Jones, the ‘Dementia Friendly Eureka’ program offers much-needed support and guidance for the future. Crawford-Jones expressed relief, stating, “Knowing that he’s not at risk of getting lost when I’m not looking is incredibly comforting.”

Sarver highlighted the importance of raising awareness about dementia, stating, “The lack of discussion on how to support individuals with dementia is a significant drawback. By sharing our experiences and knowledge, we can collectively benefit and improve the community’s understanding of this condition.”

An informational meeting is scheduled to take place on August 1 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Liberty Bible Church on Church Road in Eureka. The event is open to all members of the community and aims to provide valuable insights into the ‘Dementia Friendly Eureka’ program.
