DEATH VALLEY, California — (AP) — A deadly heat wave that swept through the West over the weekend has claimed its first victim in Death Valley, California. The scorching temperatures have shattered records and are now set to engulf large parts of the East Coast on Monday.

The extreme heat caused the tragic death of a motorcyclist in Death Valley over the weekend. The U.S. is currently in the grip of a relentless heat wave, with triple-digit temperatures predicted for many areas along the East Coast.

According to the latest reports, the global temperature for June marked the 13th consecutive month of record warmth. Additionally, it was the 12th straight month where the world was 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than pre-industrial times, as confirmed by the European climate service Copernicus.

An excessive heat warning, the highest alert issued by the National Weather Service, is currently in effect for approximately 36 million people, representing about 10% of the population. Weather service meteorologist Bryan Jackson stated that numerous locations in the West and Pacific Northwest have either tied or broken previous heat records.

The blistering heat wave in Death Valley saw temperatures soaring to a high of 128 F (53.3 C) over the weekend. Tragically, a visitor lost their life due to heat exposure, while another individual was hospitalized. The victims were part of a group of six motorcyclists riding through the scorching Badwater Basin area.

Park officials have issued a statement urging visitors to exercise caution during this period of extreme heat. Superintendent Mike Reynolds emphasized the importance of avoiding prolonged exposure to high temperatures and staying in air-conditioned environments to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Heat records have been shattered across the Southwest, with rare heat advisories extending even to higher elevations such as around Lake Tahoe. The Reno weather service in Nevada warned of significant heat risks, even in mountainous regions.

Looking ahead, more extreme temperatures are forecast, with Furnace Creek in Death Valley expected to reach a scorching 130 F (54.4 C) midweek. The hottest temperature ever officially recorded on Earth was 134 F (56.67 C) in Death Valley in July 1913, though some experts dispute this claim.

As the heat wave continues to grip the nation, authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
