PAGE COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon in the serene waters of the Shenandoah River, as a Washington D.C. man lost his life in a tragic drowning accident.
Page County Sheriff Chad Cubbage issued a solemn statement revealing that the distressing event occurred shortly after 4 p.m. when a distress call was received concerning a possible drowning near Compton Rapids.

Law enforcement swiftly sprang into action, arriving at the scene to find a harrowing sight – witnesses recounting the heartbreaking moment when the victim, identified as 37-year-old Melvin Sorto, found himself in distress while swimming, ultimately succumbing to the unforgiving currents of the river.
Bystanders bravely intervened, pulling Sorto from the water in a valiant attempt to revive him before emergency medical services could arrive at the scene. Tragically, their efforts were in vain, as Sorto was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Sheriff Cubbage has indicated that no foul play is suspected in this devastating incident; however, the presence of alcohol is believed to have played a role in the tragic outcome.
