On the afternoon of 3 February, 2023, Luke Matthews, a 24-year-old Gainesville man and recent University of Florida graduate, embarked on a fishing expedition at Orange Lake, a sprawling 12,550-acre Fish Management Area in southeastern Alachua County. Little did he know that he would soon find himself in a battle with a largemouth bass of epic proportions.

Unforeseen Confrontation

Participating in a private competitive fishing event, Matthews came face to face with a largemouth bass unlike any he had ever encountered before. The bass, later identified as Micropterus salmoides, aggressively attacked Matthews’ topwater frog bait, leading to a dramatic struggle between man and fish.

Despite the bass’s formidable size and strength, Matthews managed to subdue the creature through lawful means and safely restrain it for the necessary documentation required by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

A Fishing Enthusiast’s Triumph

Having honed his fishing skills since the sixth grade, Matthews was well-versed in the art of bass fishing. However, nothing could have prepared him for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that presented itself on that fateful day at Orange Lake.

Teaming up with his partner and fellow UF graduate, Andrew Owens, Matthews navigated the familiar waters of Orange Lake in search of their next catch. Little did they know that their routine fishing trip would soon turn into a remarkable tale of triumph and perseverance.

A Legendary Catch

As the sun began to set over the lake, Matthews and Owens found themselves in a small cove adjacent to a hydrilla flat. It was here that Matthews cast his line towards a subtle disturbance in the water, only to be met with an explosive strike from a massive bass.

The ensuing battle between man and fish was nothing short of extraordinary, with Matthews ultimately emerging victorious over the gargantuan bass. While the lack of a scale initially posed a challenge for the anglers, they managed to secure one in time to weigh the colossal catch.

A Bittersweet Farewell

As Matthews released the bass back into the waters of Orange Lake, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of bittersweet satisfaction. Knowing that a fish of such size and calibre would be nearly impossible to surpass, Matthews bid farewell to his new personal best with a mixture of pride and nostalgia.

The FWC’s TrophyCatch program, designed to collect data on largemouth bass and promote fishing in Florida, offers anglers the opportunity to document their big catches and contribute to conservation efforts. Matthews’ remarkable encounter with the Hall of Fame-worthy bass serves as a testament to the thrill and excitement of fishing in the Sunshine State.
