PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of the victim found in the Illinois River near Bartonville as 14-year-old Leron Griffin from the Bloomington-Normal area. The discovery was made by a fisherman near the Peoria Lock and Dam behind Liberty Steel.

Autopsy Results

The autopsy conducted on Griffin revealed that he died from drowning, with no signs of any inflicted trauma or injury. According to Coroner Jamie Harwood, Griffin had been in the water for a period of no more than two days.

Investigation Ongoing

Peoria County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Griffin’s tragic death. They are working to determine how, why, where, and when Griffin ended up in the river. The community is urged to come forward with any information that may assist in the investigation.
