Over the past three weeks, Montana has seen a tragic increase in drownings, with eight confirmed deaths and one presumed drowning. The incidents have occurred in various locations across the state, highlighting the importance of water safety and awareness.

In Glacier National Park, two separate drowning incidents occurred on Saturday, July 6, 2024. The first involved a 26-year-old man from India who was hiking near Avalanche Lake Trail. Witnesses reported seeing him go into Avalanche Creek, where he was swept away by the current into the gorge. Despite search efforts, his body has not been found and is presumed dead.

Later that same day, a 28-year-old man from Nepal drowned while swimming in Lake McDonald. The inexperienced swimmer went underwater and did not resurface. His body was located offshore and recovered by the Flathead County Sheriff’s dive team.

In the Libby area, the body of kayaker Jessica Prado was recovered from the Kootenai River. She had been reported missing after a kayak capsized near China Rapids. Tragically, Prado did not survive the incident.

In the Missouri River near Craig, 71-year-old Danial Francis Gard drowned while trying to retrieve an oar that had fallen into the water. Despite efforts to revive him, Gard did not survive the incident.

On the east side of Glacier National Park, 26-year-old Gillian Tones from North Apollo, Pennsylvania, drowned near St. Mary Falls. She slipped on wet rocks and was swept into the fast-moving water, where she became trapped underwater before being rescued by park visitors.

A 76-year-old man, Roger Lee Booth of Charleston, West Virginia, drowned in the Bitterroot River after a rafting accident near Corvallis. Despite efforts to save him, Booth tragically lost his life in the incident.

In addition to the confirmed drownings, the search continues for Great Falls teen Kendall Danna at Lake Elwell. Kendall was one of four people paddle-boarding when inclement weather struck, causing waves and high winds. While three individuals were rescued, Kendall remains missing.

These recent tragedies serve as a sobering reminder of the importance of water safety and vigilance while enjoying Montana’s beautiful outdoor spaces. Authorities urge caution and preparedness to prevent further loss of life in the water.
