Police in Newtown, Connecticut, apprehended a man in a dramatic backyard arrest on Sunday following a high-speed chase and crash involving a stolen vehicle.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, the incident unfolded around 11:37 a.m. when an officer tried to stop a vehicle on Toddy Hill Road in Newtown. The driver, later identified as 21-year-old Joao Gabril Almeida-Bastos from Danbury, allegedly evaded the officer by making a U-turn and speeding away northbound on Toddy Hill Road.
As the pursuit intensified, Almeida-Bastos lost control of the stolen car, veered off the road, and crashed at the intersection with Turkey Roost Road. He then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, leaving a trail of chaos behind him.

Police Response and Arrest
Law enforcement agencies, including the Newtown Police Department and Connecticut State Police, launched a massive search operation to locate Almeida-Bastos. With the help of vigilant citizens who reported sightings of the suspect in various neighbourhoods, the authorities were able to track him down.
After several hours of pursuit, Almeida-Bastos was finally apprehended in the backyard of a Toddy Hill Road residence. Despite attempting to break into the house, he was thwarted by a locked door.
Legal Consequences
Following his arrest, Almeida-Bastos was taken to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during his escape attempt. He was subsequently charged with a litany of offences, including reckless driving, attempted burglary, and larceny of a motor vehicle.
Currently held on a $100,000 bond, Almeida-Bastos is scheduled to appear before Danbury Superior Court to face the consequences of his actions.
