On the morning of Friday, July 5th, an individual not associated with the university gained access to an apartment within UCLA’s Saxon Suites and committed a heinous act of sexual assault against a student. The distressing incident took place around 2:40 a.m. and the perpetrator quickly fled the scene.
Following the alarming event, the UCLA Police Department promptly launched an intensive investigation. Through diligent efforts and collaboration, detectives were able to track down and apprehend the suspect by 9:45 p.m. the same day. The victim, along with two witnesses, positively identified the offender.
The suspect, identified as Jeffrey Brewer, born on October 3, 1982, was taken into custody and now faces a slew of serious charges. These include Assault with Intent to Commit a Felony, False Imprisonment, Burglary, and Forcible Sexual Penetration. Brewer is currently detained at the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Inmate Reception Center, with a bail set at £1,050,000.
Reacting to the incident, Chantal de la Cruz, a student residing in the dormitory, expressed her dismay to NBC Los Angeles, stating, “Many Bruins are deeply upset with the university. They claim to prioritize our safety, but where was the protection in this instance? Frankly, I feel let down by the university, especially given recent events with law enforcement on campus.”

Earlier in the year, the student-led Palestine Solidarity Encampment faced a violent attack by a sizeable group of individuals on April 30th and May 1st. Surprisingly, there was no immediate intervention by the UCLA Administration, UCPD, or local law enforcement until the early hours of the following day, after Mayor Bass announced the deployment of LAPD officers to the university.
Despite the disturbing nature of the attack, only one suspect has been arrested among the assailants, and the District Attorney chose not to pursue felony charges against Edan On, the individual in custody. Subsequently, on the subsequent night, LAPD and CHP officers were dispatched by the UCLA Administration to disperse the camp, resulting in numerous injuries and the arrest of 200 students and faculty members when law enforcement resorted to using munitions and “less than lethal” weapons on the protestors.
Ironically, Vice Chancellor Darnell Hunt endorsed the police action as a measure for “student safety.” The tumultuous events have sparked outrage and raised serious questions about the university’s handling of security matters.
