KALISPELL, Montana (Daily Montanan) — The serene beauty of Glacier National Park was marred by tragedy over the weekend as two young men lost their lives in separate drowning incidents. The incidents occurred on Saturday, leaving park officials and visitors shocked and saddened.

First Tragedy at Avalanche Creek Gorge

The first victim, a 26-year-old man from India who was living in California, was exploring the Avalanche Lake Trail with his friends when the unfortunate incident took place. He accidentally fell into Avalanche Creek around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. Despite efforts to rescue him, the strong current swept him into the gorge, where he disappeared from sight. The park authorities were alerted promptly, and a search-and-rescue operation was launched, but the man remains missing and is presumed to have tragically lost his life.

Second Drowning at Lake McDonald

Later that evening, tragedy struck again as a 28-year-old man from Nepal, who was vacationing with friends from Portland, Oregon, drowned while swimming in Lake McDonald near Sprague Creek Campground. The man, described as an inexperienced swimmer, encountered difficulties about 30 yards from the shore and submerged underwater, never resurfacing. Despite swift action by park rangers and emergency services, the man’s body was recovered by the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office’s dive team, approximately 35 feet below the surface.

Consular Assistance and Park Safety

Efforts are being made to inform the families of the deceased individuals, with consulates for Nepal and India being contacted for assistance. These tragic incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers present in natural environments, especially around bodies of water.
