Family Seeks Help to Bring Loved One Home from Italy After Stroke

A family from Greer, South Carolina, is facing a desperate situation as they try to bring their loved one, Grace Bradley, home from Italy after she suffered a stroke while on vacation. Grace, who was born with Vodder syndrome and has been living with paraplegia since the age of 13, went on a long-planned trip to Italy in June, marking her first opportunity to travel in her life. She uses a wheelchair to get around and had spent years planning and saving up money for the vacation.

Grace’s grandfather, Tony Bradley, shared that over the past few years, she has been becoming more independent. Despite her condition, she works as a cashier at Publix and manages to handle most things on her own, only requiring occasional transportation assistance.

While Grace’s family wasn’t entirely on board with her Italy trip, they didn’t want to hold her back from experiencing independence and adventure. Unfortunately, their fears came true when they received news on June 26 that Grace had suffered a stroke while in Italy. She is currently being treated in a hospital in Venice, where her grandmother, Juli Bradley, has flown to be by her side.

Due to the severity of Grace’s condition, she is unable to fly commercially back to the United States. The family is facing a hefty cost of up to £200,000 to arrange for a medevac flight accompanied by a doctor to bring Grace home safely. Medicaid will not cover any expenses or care as the medical emergency occurred in a foreign country.

Tony Bradley expressed the urgency of the situation, stating, “We need her home. She’s not doing well, and she’s not going to get better until she comes home. So, if you guys can help, we’d really appreciate it.” Despite being military veterans, the family was shocked to discover that they could not receive assistance from the U.S. government in bringing Grace back home.

In a bid to raise the necessary funds, the family has set up a GoFundMe page, hoping for the kindness and generosity of others to help bring Grace back home. As of early Monday, nearly £30,000 had been donated towards their goal.
