Over the weekend, Glacier National Park was struck by tragedy as two young men lost their lives in separate drowning incidents. The first victim, a 26-year-old individual from India residing in California, was hiking near the gorge on the Avalanche Lake Trail when he tragically fell into Avalanche Creek around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Despite efforts by witnesses and park staff, the man was swept away by the strong current and disappeared into the gorge. Search and rescue teams, including a helicopter and more than 10 rangers, scoured the area but unfortunately, the man could not be located. It is believed that he is trapped underwater in the gorge due to the high runoff levels in the creek.

Later that same day, another drowning occurred in the park, claiming the life of a 28-year-old man from Nepal who was holidaying with friends and residing in Portland, Oregon. The man, who was reportedly not a strong swimmer, encountered difficulties while swimming in Lake McDonald near Sprague Creek Campground.

Despite the swift response of park rangers and the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office dive team, the man’s body was found submerged about 35 feet underwater. Both victims have yet to be publicly identified as authorities work to notify their families.
