Accident – Death – Obituary News : An 84-year-old man tragically passed away on Friday, following a hit-and-run incident that occurred several weeks ago in east Birmingham. The victim, identified as Erwin Ellis Curtis by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, was struck while in his wheelchair on Messer Airport Highway at Georgia Road on Father’s Day.

According to authorities, the collision took place at 10:58 a.m. on June 16, when Curtis was crossing the street and was hit by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene. He was immediately rushed to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 8:15 a.m. on July 5.
Described as a beloved figure by his niece, Ilsa Curtis, Erwin was a pillar of strength, love, and wisdom for his family. Ilsa shared that her uncle resisted going to the hospital after the incident, but she insisted as he had suffered bleeding on the brain and had to be placed in a medically-induced coma.
Prior to the accident, Erwin and Ilsa had a tradition of speaking on the phone every Sunday, with the tragic incident occurring on the last day they communicated. The family had been looking forward to their first reunion on July 27, but instead, they are now grieving the loss of their patriarch in such a senseless manner.
