At approximately 7 a.m. on Friday, a man sought help from an officer at Berkley Avenue and St. Charles Road, reporting that he had just been robbed by a man later identified as 19-year-old Bennie Gates from Chicago.

The victim had offered Gates a ride for $40 after picking him up at the Greyhound bus station in Chicago, as per a news release from DuPage County prosecutors.

After dropping Gates off at Elmhurst Terrace apartments on Fellows Court, the situation took a menacing turn. Gates exited the car, approached the driver’s side, and brandished a handgun from his waistband, menacingly informing the victim, “You didn’t know I had a gun, did you?”

Subsequently, Gates demanded his fare back and instructed the victim to retrieve his suitcase from the trunk before walking off towards an apartment on Fellows Court.

Hours later, surveillance on the apartment revealed a peculiar sight – a detective observed an Uber arriving to pick up what seemed to be a long-haired woman in a bomber jacket and beanie. The detective intercepted the Uber near Portillo’s entrance on Route 83 and uncovered Gates disguised in a wig. Upon discovery, Gates made a desperate attempt to escape, darting across six lanes of traffic.

Following a meticulous search involving aerial support from a helicopter, drones, and K-9 units, Gates was eventually apprehended while hiding in a detached garage on South Monterey Street. It was revealed that Gates had endeavored to conceal his identity by assuming the guise of a woman.

Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean commended the diligent efforts of detectives in safeguarding the community from potential harm, stating, “The fact this individual remained in hiding for approximately 10 hours while detectives maintained watch over the search area demonstrates their unwavering commitment to safeguard Elmhurst from dangerous criminal activity.”

Gates now faces a felony charge of armed robbery with a firearm. DuPage County Judge Jeffrey MacKay acceded to prosecutors’ request to detain Gates pending trial.
