BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – The annual Blessing of the Fleet ceremony in Biloxi has been a longstanding tradition for almost a century, promoting a safe and prosperous shrimping season for local fishermen. Hosted by St. Michael Catholic Church, also known as the “Church of the Fisherman,” the event is a sacred and cherished occasion for the community.

This year, the 2024 Shrimp King and Queen, Baylie Gollott-Ho and Van Pham, joined Monsignor Dominick Fullam on the blessing boat to partake in the ceremony. Gollott-Ho, coming from a family with a seafood background spanning five generations, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to support her heritage.

Pham, a dedicated shrimper with over 40 years of experience, took a break from his usual work to serve as the Shrimp King for the event. Michael Kovacevich, a member of the Blessing of the Fleet committee, highlighted the importance of honouring working captains like Pham during the ceremony.

Before the boats were blessed with holy water by Monsignor Fullam, the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office assisted with a wreath dropping ceremony. This gesture was a tribute to the deceased fishermen who lost their lives at sea, symbolising their memory and sacrifice.
