Three individuals were taken into custody on Sunday following a high-speed pursuit in Monroe County, authorities confirmed.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office stated that the chase unfolded after a deputy was alerted to reports of a reckless driver at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Sunday along North Dixie Highway near Interstate 75 in Frenchtown Township.

Dispatchers fielded multiple calls regarding a dark Jeep Cherokee swerving erratically and veering into oncoming traffic, according to a statement released by sheriff’s officials.

Deputies managed to locate the Jeep parked on North Dixie Highway to the west of I-75, the statement revealed.

Upon engaging with the driver, a 21-year-old Newport resident, authorities discovered that he was unlicensed and displayed signs of intoxication.

Despite deputies’ instructions to exit the vehicle, the driver refused and sped off south on the highway. Pursuing officers reported that the suspect drove recklessly, repeatedly crossing into opposing lanes.

During the pursuit along Noble Avenue and North Monroe Street, the suspect opened the driver-side door and made provocative gestures towards the trailing deputies, law enforcement officials disclosed.

The chase continued onto northbound Telegraph until one of the Jeep’s wheels malfunctioned at the entrance to Kimberly Estates Mobile Home Park.

After abandoning the vehicle and attempting to flee on foot, the suspect was swiftly apprehended. He allegedly put up resistance and assaulted officers before being subdued, authorities stated.

At one point during the chase, a maroon Jeep Cherokee positioned itself between deputies and the suspect’s vehicle, impeding the pursuit, according to reports.

Following the conclusion of the pursuit and the escape of the SUV’s driver, two occupants in the maroon Jeep emerged and obstructed deputies as they detained the initial suspect, investigators revealed.

The two individuals, identified as a 24-year-old Newport woman and a 54-year-old man from Detroit, were subsequently arrested.

Law enforcement officials have indicated that the investigation into the incident remains ongoing and have urged anyone with pertinent information to contact the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at (734) 240-7758.
