A 30-year-old tribal man from Sahaj bahal within Chiplima police outpost in Burla has accused the police of detaining and torturing him in custody on suspicion of tractor battery theft. The incident, which occurred on July 3, came to light after the victim’s mother filed a complaint with the District Welfare Office, demanding action against the police.
According to the complaint, police visited the victim, Rajesh Mirdha’s house on Wednesday night following a complaint of tractor battery theft. Despite Rajesh denying the allegations, he was forcibly taken to the police station where he was allegedly subjected to brutal beatings in an attempt to force a confession. Rajesh, however, did not succumb to the pressure and was eventually released.
Upon reaching the District Welfare Office, Rajesh’s body displayed visible injury marks. District welfare officer Bhagirathi Patel stated, “The victim’s mother claimed that Rajesh was subjected to casteist remarks and physical abuse in police custody. Given the written complaint highlighting caste-based discrimination, we have forwarded the matter to Sambalpur police for investigation. If proven, the use of casteist language or custodial torture would constitute an offence under the atrocity act.”
In response to the complaint, Burla SDPO Ambit Mohanty confirmed that an investigation has been initiated based on the DWO’s referral. A separate complaint has also been lodged against the youth for theft charges. The police will question both the youth and the staff involved to establish the facts and compile a comprehensive report.
