Over the weekend, dedicated volunteers with the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup Program joined forces along the Gulf Coast to tackle the aftermath of Fourth of July celebrations. Armed with cleanup supplies and a shared commitment to environmental stewardship, these individuals worked tirelessly to rid the beaches of fireworks debris and other litter left behind by holiday revelers.
From the shores of Pascagoula to the sandy expanses of Bay St. Louis, participants in the annual Star-Spangled Cleanup event fanned out to cover a wide swath of coastline. Each location was overseen by a Site Captain, whose guidance and support ensured that the cleanup efforts ran smoothly and efficiently.
In addition to removing trash from the beaches, volunteers also took the time to collect valuable data on the types and quantities of waste being generated. This information will help inform future cleanup initiatives and guide efforts to reduce littering and pollution in the area.
Reflecting on the impact of their work, Program Coordinator Evelyn McQueen expressed gratitude for the dedication shown by all those who participated in the cleanup. “It’s truly a humbling experience,” she remarked. “Coming together as a community to make a positive impact on our environment is incredibly rewarding. If we can continue to work together towards a cleaner, healthier coastline, the effects will be far-reaching.”
