Accident – Death – Obituary News : A shocking incident unfolded in Pune’s Vishrambaug area on Friday evening, as a drunk driver allegedly attempted to set a woman police officer and a constable on fire during a routine drink and drive operation. The incident, which took place in front of the Faraskhana police station at around 8pm, was averted thanks to the quick thinking of the constables present.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, identified as Sanjay Fakira Salve, who is originally from Jalna but currently residing in Pimpri Chinchwad, tried to ignite the petrol he had doused on the female Assistant Police Inspector (API) and the constable. Fortunately, he held the lighter upside down, preventing a potential disaster.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I) Sandeep Singh Gill commended the constables for their swift action in overpowering the driver and taking him into custody. The complaint was lodged by police constable Sameer Prakash Sawant, who was also at the scene and witnessed the terrifying incident unfold.
Sawant explained that the accused, in an inebriated state, became agitated when the police detained him and pulled the challan machine from the female API. He then proceeded to pour petrol on her and the constable, with the intention of causing harm.
The Vishrambaug police have arrested Salve for his reckless actions and have charged him under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 109 (attempted murder) and 132 (Assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of duty). The police have praised their alertness for preventing a major tragedy from occurring.
