Financial debt, resulting from the medical treatment of his wife for cancer, led a couple from Kerala to tragically end their lives in Nagpur. The couple, Riju Vijayan alias Vijay Nair (42) and Priya Riju Nair (40), consumed a poisoned Frooti drink late at night in their rented accommodation in the Gajanan Nagar area of Jaripatka Police Station on Thursday night. Fortunately, their 11-year-old daughter survived the ordeal.
Tragic Circumstances
The incident came to light when their daughter woke up the next morning. The couple had moved from Trivandrum, Kerala, to Nagpur for Priya’s brain cancer treatment. Riju had to take his wife to the hospital weekly, spending at least Rs 20,000 each time. To cover these expenses, Riju borrowed money from relatives and friends, with the deadline for repayment looming on July 1.
Desperate Measures
Priya required a costly injection weekly from a super-speciality hospital, or else she would suffer severe bleeding from her ears and nose. The couple had been borrowing money for her treatment, hoping to repay once assistance arrived from their relatives in Kerala. Riju even borrowed money from an e-rickshaw driver who ferried them to the hospital.
Tragic Decision
Feeling overwhelmed by their financial burdens, the couple decided to end their lives. Riju purchased poison and mixed it in a Frooti drink after dinner, a favourite of their daughter. Late at night, they consumed the poisoned drink while their daughter slept. Upon waking up and sensing something amiss, their daughter left the house after vomiting.
Discovery and Investigation
When the house owner discovered the bodies the next morning, Jaripatka Police were alerted and the bodies were sent for post-mortem. Reports indicate that the couple attempted to cut their veins and lured their daughter with poison-laced food before their tragic end. The police found evidence of their preparations, but no suicide note was left behind.
Police Actions
Jaripatka Police have registered a case of accidental death and are conducting further investigations into this tragic incident. The couple’s actions have left their community in shock and disbelief, highlighting the devastating impact of financial stress and health crises on families.
