A man from Union County, identified as Pierre Joseph, aged 68 and hailing from Plainfield, has been arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree sexual assault and two counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child in connection with incidents that took place in a church in North Plainfield Borough. This information was confirmed by Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.

Incident Details

The alleged incidents took place in a local church on a Sunday afternoon. Police responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible sexual assault of a minor that had occurred earlier that day. Upon arriving at the church, officers were informed that the suspect, Pierre Joseph, had been detained at the scene. He was then taken into custody and transported to the North Plainfield Police Department for questioning.

Investigation and Victims

Following the initial reports, detectives from the North Plainfield Police Department notified the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Unit. A 7-year-old male victim was interviewed at the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Child Advocacy Center, where he disclosed details of the incident involving Joseph. Another victim, a 9-year-old male, also reported a similar incident that had taken place earlier in the year.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the 7-year-old victim had been followed into the church bathroom by Joseph, who proceeded to touch him inappropriately. The incident was reported to the church pastor by another individual. The 9-year-old victim shared a similar experience of being touched inappropriately by Joseph in the church bathroom.

Legal Actions

As a result of the investigation, Pierre Joseph was formally charged on Sunday, June 23, and was remanded to the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding these incidents to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
