KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) – A devastating incident occurred in Maryville, Tennessee, on the Fourth of July, resulting in the tragic death of a local man. According to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, the man, identified as Matthew Sellars, suffered a fatal chest wound from an exploding firework.
Deputies were called to the scene on Evergreen Farms Lane around 11 p.m. on Thursday night after receiving reports of an unconscious person. Upon arrival, they found three individuals attempting to perform CPR on Sellars.
The sheriff’s office report indicates that deputies took over CPR efforts and applied pressure to Sellars’ wound until paramedics arrived. Sellars had been shooting fireworks with friends by hand-holding them, when one of the fireworks exploded into his chest, causing him to collapse with severe injuries.
Sellars was rushed to Blount Memorial Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead at around 11:30 p.m. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, his injuries proved to be too severe.

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no charges or citations were issued in connection with the incident, and fortunately, there were no other injuries reported.
