The Busan District Court in South Korea has handed down a 15-year prison sentence to a man convicted of attempting to murder Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung. The court also found the man guilty of violating the Public Official Election Act, as reported by local media.

Presided over by Judge Kim Yong-gyun, the court emphasized the gravity of the crime, describing it as a deliberate attempt to deprive an individual of their right to life and to interfere with the victim’s participation in the parliamentary election, thereby impeding election freedom.

The verdict highlighted the premeditated nature of the attack, with the assailant reportedly practicing stabbing motions and stalking Lee at multiple public events. The perpetrator, identified as a 67-year-old man named Mr. Kim, was placed on probation for five years and was revealed to be a repeat offender. The court raised doubts about the sincerity of the defendant’s belated apology, questioning Kim’s self-comparison to an independent fighter and his justification for the crime.

Both the defence and prosecution have been given one week to appeal the court’s decision.

The assault took place in January when the assailant approached Lee under the pretence of seeking an autograph before stabbing him in the neck with a knife. Following his arrest, Kim confessed to the police that his intention was to prevent Lee from becoming the president of South Korea. The attack resulted in Lee undergoing surgery and being hospitalised for eight days, prompting him to publicly denounce the “politics of hatred” in the country.

South Korea is scheduled to hold presidential elections in 2027, with Lee maintaining his position as a prominent candidate despite facing bribery charges last month. Lee has denied the allegations, with his party claiming that the timing of the indictment was politically motivated.
