In Jackson County, Mississippi, a resident of Ocean Springs had a frightening experience with fireworks on the Fourth of July. Emily Blanchard found herself in the emergency room after a Roman candle mishap left her injured and shaken.
According to Blanchard, the incident occurred around 8 p.m. when a Roman candle unexpectedly backfired, causing her significant pain and distress. She had purchased two fire lollipop Roman candles with her boyfriend, and after enjoying the first one, they decided to light the second.
However, what was meant to be a fun evening quickly turned into a night of agony for Blanchard. The explosion from the Roman candle left her gripping her hand in pain, unable to hear or see clearly. She feared that she had lost her hand, and her boyfriend was equally alarmed by the severity of the situation.
Photos shared by Blanchard post-accident revealed the warning label on the Roman candle that read “HOLD HERE.” Dr. Gregory Patino, who has treated numerous fireworks-related injuries over the years at Singing River Health System’s Pascagoula Hospital, emphasized the dangers of handling fireworks improperly.

“People shouldn’t be holding the fireworks when they are trying to shoot those. We see hand injuries all the time,” Dr. Patino stated. He recounted the two injuries from Fourth of July accidents that required operative repair, emphasizing the importance of following safety guidelines when using fireworks.
Blanchard, who suffered burns on her hand, arm, and side, was fortunate to be discharged from the emergency room by 11 p.m. Despite the pain and trauma she endured, she is expected to make a full recovery following treatment.
Statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that in 2023, approximately 9,700 individuals sought treatment for firework injuries in emergency rooms, with eight reported deaths. Firecrackers and sparklers were among the leading causes of injuries, highlighting the need for caution when handling fireworks.
As the Fourth of July celebrations come to an end, Blanchard reflects on her ordeal and vows to avoid handheld fireworks in the future. Her experience serves as a cautionary tale for others to prioritize safety and follow guidelines when engaging in fireworks displays.
