Dr Rajesh Dighe, assistant chief medical officer at PMC, stated that heightened surveillance measures have been put in place. Samples from 68 pregnant women in areas where Zika cases were detected have been sent to the National Institute of Virology for screening.

In a bid to curb the spread of the virus, the civic health department has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the builder of a society in Mundhwa where a mosquito breeding site was found in a duct. Dr Dighe emphasized the importance of proactive measures and revealed that a 33-year-old pregnant woman residing in the society has been counselled by health officials.

The pregnant woman has been advised to undergo a nuchal translucency (NT) scan, a first-trimester ultrasound procedure that assesses fluid levels behind the baby’s neck. Additionally, she has been instructed to take folic acid supplements and undergo further tests as recommended by her doctor.

Two of the newly identified cases involve a 27-year-old woman from Ambegaon Bk, Sinhagad road, in her 12th week of pregnancy, and a 28-year-old woman from Pashan/Aundh. The 28-year-old woman, who presented with symptoms of fever and rash, has been hospitalized, while the woman from Ambegaon reported symptoms such as headaches.

Despite the concerning situation, health officials have assured that all nine patients with Zika virus infections are in stable condition. Given the potential risks of Zika to the foetus, doctors have stressed the importance of close monitoring of pregnant women with the virus.

In a bid to tackle mosquito breeding sites, the civic health department has collected fines amounting to Rs 84,800 from societies and construction sites. A total of 92 notices have been issued to offenders.

Residents have been urged to take necessary precautions, such as emptying water containers and air coolers to prevent mosquito breeding. The PMC continues to emphasize the importance of community involvement in controlling the spread of the Zika virus in Pune.
