Over the course of four years, the university aims to increase retention rates by 5% and improve six-year graduation rates for this specific demographic by the end of the 2027-28 academic year. To facilitate the implementation of the program, Radford University will utilise the grant funds to hire four dedicated student success advocates.

These advocates will be based within Radford’s Dean of Students office and will be tasked with supporting all Pell-eligible students. Their responsibilities will include providing tailored programming, advocacy, interventions, and access to resources that can help these students stay enrolled at the university and successfully graduate. Currently, approximately 37% of Radford’s undergraduate student population is eligible for the Pell Grant.

Interim Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Bruce Hayden, expressed his enthusiasm for the impact that this SCHEV grant will have on Pell-eligible students. He highlighted the importance of providing dedicated resources and advocates for these students, believing that the support and guidance offered by the student success advocates will significantly contribute to the students’ graduation goals.

The employment of student success advocates aligns with Radford University’s ongoing commitment to promoting the representation and success of low-income and Pell-eligible undergraduate students. This program is in line with the Virginia Plan, the strategic higher education plan for the commonwealth, which focuses on addressing key areas such as university enrollment, retention, and graduation rates for Pell-eligible and low-income students.
