Authorities have reported a surge in violence during the extended Fourth of July weekend, with at least 33 people killed and dozens more injured in shootings and other incidents nationwide.

Historically Deadly Holiday

The Fourth of July has a grim history of being one of the deadliest days of the year in the United States. Last year, a spate of shootings around the holiday resulted in over a dozen fatalities and more than 60 injuries. The year before that, seven people lost their lives in a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade near Chicago.

Violence and mass shootings tend to escalate during the summer months, as more people gather for social events, schools are out, and temperatures rise.

Chicago in Mourning

Chicago has been particularly hard hit, with 11 fatalities and 55 injuries reported in shootings over the extended July Fourth weekend. A tragic incident on Thursday claimed the lives of two women and an 8-year-old boy in a mass shooting.

Philadelphia witnessed a fatal drive-by shooting that claimed the life of a 19-year-old man, with six others sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. In the Boston area, a series of shootings left one man dead and five others wounded.

Connecticut mourns the loss of a 23-year-old woman, Shamyria Williams, who was found shot in her car and pronounced dead at a hospital. In Albany, New York, six teenagers were injured in a shooting at a large gathering.

In Pontiac, Michigan, five teens were wounded in a shooting following a fight at a party, while four individuals sustained injuries in a shooting outside a Tampa nightclub. Meanwhile, a domestic dispute in Queens, New York, resulted in the fatal stabbing of an 8-year-old boy.

Tragic incidents also unfolded in High Point, North Carolina; St. Louis, Missouri; West Virginia; and Taneytown, Maryland, claiming several lives and leaving others injured.
