Timothy Root, a 57-year-old man from Philadelphia, has been accused of committing a brazen burglary at a Nike store located in the Tanger Outlets in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The incident, which took place on March 5, involved Root breaking into the store using a sledgehammer and making off with over $7,000 worth of merchandise.
Arrest and Charges
Following the burglary, Root was arrested and charged with multiple offences including burglary, theft by unlawful taking, possession of an instrument of crime with intent, and criminal mischief – damaging property. The arrest came after officers responded to a report of a burglary at the Hershey Tanger Nike Outlet and found the store’s front door smashed and merchandise stolen.
Surveillance Footage
Store managers provided surveillance footage that captured Root’s actions. The footage showed Root arriving at the store in a car, surveying the premises, and then using a sledgehammer to break the glass door. He was seen making multiple trips into the store, carrying armfuls of clothing and apparel, before driving away with the stolen items.
Total Loss and Additional Incidents
The total loss from the burglary at the Nike store was estimated to be $7,348.61, with an additional $2,164.70 needed for repairs to the broken door. This incident was not isolated, as similar burglaries were reported at a Calvin Klein store in East Lampeter Township and a GUESS outlet store in Glouchester Township, New Jersey.
Arrest and Bail
Root was eventually apprehended on April 20 during a routine traffic stop near the Tannersville Premium Outlets. The arresting officer discovered a duct-taped sledgehammer and black gloves in Root’s car, leading to his arrest. Root’s bail was set at $50,000 and he was remanded to Dauphin County Prison on July 3.
