BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (FOX 9) – A man has been taken into custody following a dramatic exchange of gunfire with Richfield police in Bloomington, which resulted in a tense four-hour standoff. Law enforcement officials have confirmed the incident and indicated that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently investigating the matter.
The Bloomington Police Department disclosed that Richfield police were summoned to respond to a suicide threat at a residence located in the 8700 block of 12th Avenue South in Bloomington in the early hours of Friday morning. Richfield officers were called in to assist due to Bloomington police being occupied with a burglary incident at a jewellery store at the same time.
Upon arrival at the scene, an intense exchange of gunfire ensued between the distressed individual and Richfield police officers. Additional law enforcement resources, including Bloomington’s Emergency Response Unit (ERU) and crisis negotiators, were promptly dispatched to the location and attempted to establish communication with the suspect via phone.
Footage captured by FOX 9 captured the moment when Bloomington police deployed their bomb squad unit as a precautionary measure.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man from Bloomington, eventually emerged from the residence around 4 a.m. and surrendered to authorities without any further incident. He is currently being held in Bloomington police custody pending the filing of official charges.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries resulting from the altercation.
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire and the events leading up to the man’s arrest.
