Raju, along with several other Bangladeshis, attempted to cross the border into India through the area near Pillar No. 376 at night. Flag Meeting Called by Thakurgaon 50 BGB Commander

Following the incident, Thakurgaon 50 BGB Commander Lt Col Md Tanzir Ahmed called for a flag meeting on Friday to address the escalating tensions along the border. The meeting aimed to facilitate communication and discuss ways to prevent similar incidents in the future.

High Number of Fatalities in Recent Years

Government data reveals a concerning trend of fatalities among Bangladeshis at the hands of the BSF. Between 2009 and 2017, a total of 291 Bangladeshis lost their lives due to BSF actions. The situation worsened in 2020, with the BSF recording the highest number of fatalities, including 42 individuals shot dead and six others tortured to death.

Interestingly, 2018 saw a slight decrease in the number of Bangladeshi fatalities caused by BSF shootings. This fluctuation in numbers highlights the need for improved border management and communication between the two nations to prevent further loss of life.

As tensions continue to simmer along the Indo-Bangladesh border, it is imperative for both countries to prioritize peaceful resolution and cooperation to avoid further tragedies like the one that befell Raju and his companions.
