Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The recent death of a 65-year-old man in Thiruvennainallur, Villupuram district, has sparked controversy, with some attributing it to the consumption of spurious liquor. However, Law Minister S. Regupathy has refuted these claims, stating that the man, identified as R. Jayaraman, was an alcoholic who failed to respond to treatment for cancer.

According to Minister Regupathy, Jayaraman had been consuming alcohol purchased in neighbouring Puducherry. The alcohol was reportedly bought by a man named Murugan from a State-run liquor shop in Madukkarai, Puducherry, on June 29. Murugan consumed two packets himself and distributed two others to Jayaraman and one to Sivachandran. Blood samples taken from Murugan and Sivachandran tested positive for ethanol but not methanol, and both were discharged from treatment on July 3.

Jayaraman, a resident of T. Kumaramangalam, was admitted to the Primary Health Centre in Iruvelpattu on June 30 for an illness. He was later transferred to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Mundiyambakkam. Officials reported that Jayaraman had not been eating but had been consuming alcohol for two days prior to his admission.

After a thorough investigation by revenue and police officers, Murugan was arrested for illegally smuggling alcohol from Puducherry. Minister Regupathy emphasised that measures had been taken to strengthen border checkpoints to prevent such incidents in the future.

Despite the findings of the investigation, Minister Regupathy criticised AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami for politicising the man’s death and falsely claiming it was due to spurious liquor. The Minister reiterated that Jayaraman’s death was a result of his alcoholism and inability to respond to cancer treatment.
