(AP) – In a devastating incident on the Fourth of July, a pickup truck ploughed into a group of people celebrating the holiday in New York City, resulting in two fatalities and nine injuries, four of which are critical, according to authorities.

A Ford F-150 was reported to have been speeding down a street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side shortly before 9 p.m. on Thursday. The truck disregarded a stop sign, mounted the sidewalk, and crashed into Corlears Hook Park, as detailed by New York Police Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey at a press conference.

Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders found two individuals deceased. The injured included four individuals in critical condition, three with serious injuries, and two with minor injuries, according to New York City Fire Department Assistant Chief Michael Meyers.

Firefighters swiftly worked to extricate the victims trapped under the pickup truck before medical personnel initiated treatment, Meyers added.

During the subsequent news briefing, New York Police Department officials, alongside Mayor Eric Adams, ruled out the possibility of terrorism as the cause of the tragic crash. However, authorities are investigating the driver for potential alcohol involvement, which is suspected to have contributed to the accident.

Age verification of the victims proved challenging for law enforcement, as stated by Chief Maddrey.
