A manslaughter charge has been brought against a 23-year-old man in relation to the tragic death of a woman who was discovered critically injured on a street in the Spence neighbourhood.

The suspect was apprehended by general patrol officers in the 200 block of Salter Street. Following the arrest, he was transferred to the homicide unit where he was formally charged with manslaughter. The individual is currently being held in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.

The charge, stemming from an incident that took place last month, has yet to be examined in court. The accused was taken into custody after officers responded to a call in the early hours of June 23 in the 500 block of Balmoral Street. Upon arrival, they found the victim, later identified as 29-year-old Norma Jean Sumner, with severe injuries.

Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, the victim tragically succumbed to her injuries. Norma Jean Sumner, a member of the Dauphin River First Nation who had recently relocated to Winnipeg, leaves behind a grieving family who have been informed of her passing.
