Tragic Accident Claims Lives in Ocala National Forest

Ocala Forest, Putnam County, Florida — Rescuers are calling the scene “horrific.”

A devastating accident took place near National Forest Road 74 in the Ocala National Forest in Putnam County on the night of Thursday, July 4, 2024. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a driver from out of town in an SUV attempted to illegally pass a van, resulting in a tragic crash that claimed the lives of two individuals and a dog.

According to the authorities, the SUV driver was travelling south on State Road 19 towards the Marion County line, while the van was heading north. The SUV driver allegedly tried to overtake another vehicle, violating the right of way of the van, leading to a collision that caused the SUV to overturn. The van came to a stop on the eastern shoulder of the road.

The driver and passenger of the SUV, both residents of Mastic in New York, sustained serious injuries. The driver, a 60-year-old man, and the passenger, a 62-year-old woman, were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Tragically, the van occupants, a 21-year-old woman and an infant boy under the age of one, lost their lives in the collision. The whereabouts of the dog involved in the crash remain unknown at this time.

The authorities have not released the names of the victims pending notification of their families. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and it is unclear if any charges will be filed. A homicide investigator has been assigned to the case to gather more information.
