Homeowners in Monaghan are being encouraged to voice their opinions on potential adjustments to the Local Property Tax (LPT) rate in the county.

The local authority is reaching out to residents for written submissions to gather feedback on the possible implications of changing the basic rate of the Local Property Tax on businesses, individuals, and local government services.

Elected members of the local council have the authority to modify the basic rate of the Local Property Tax within their jurisdiction by up to +/-15%.

A public consultation is currently underway in preparation for an upcoming council meeting scheduled for September or early October. During this meeting, local councillors will deliberate on whether to adjust the basic rate of the Local Property Tax or maintain the current rate.

A spokesperson for Monaghan County Council stated, “We welcome written submissions from the public regarding the potential impacts of varying the basic rate of the Local Property Tax on businesses, individuals, and local services.”

Funds generated through the Local Property Tax are essential for funding a wide range of local council services, including libraries, street lighting, road maintenance, housing support, fire services, community projects, waste management, and tourism initiatives.

Interested parties are encouraged to submit their feedback by Friday, 26th July 2024. Submissions can be sent to Monaghan County Council, LPT Submissions, County Offices, The Glen, Monaghan, or emailed to lpt@monaghancoco.ie.

This initiative by Monaghan County Council aims to ensure that the community’s voices are heard and considered when making decisions about the Local Property Tax rate.
