Co-Flier Recalls Meeting Indian-Origin Woman Who Died Mid-Flight: 'Her Innocent Face...'

Manpreet Kaur wanted to become a chef.

A fellow passenger seated next to an Indian-origin woman, who tragically collapsed and passed away just moments before their Qantas flight from Melbourne to New Delhi was set to depart, has spoken out about the harrowing experience that continues to haunt him. The heartbreaking incident occurred on June 20, when 24-year-old Manpreet Kaur boarded the flight bound for Delhi and suffered a sudden medical episode while attempting to fasten her seatbelt.

Ravinder Arora, who was seated beside Ms Kaur, recounted the moments leading up to her untimely passing. “When I entered the plane, she was already seated in the aisle. I took the window seat and politely asked her to vacate hers so I could sit down,” he shared with NewsAU. “I noticed her browsing through photos on her phone, stopping at a picture of an elderly couple. I inquired if they were her parents, to which she nodded with a smile.”

Ms Kaur, who was embarking on her first trip back to India in four years, leaned forward as the aircraft taxied down the runway, resting her head on the seat in front of her. However, a sudden jolt caused her head to lurch towards Mr. Arora, prompting him to realize that something was amiss. He immediately alerted the cabin crew, who made valiant efforts to revive her to no avail.

The incident has left Mr. Arora deeply shaken. “The memory of that day will forever be etched in my mind. It is incomprehensible to witness the sudden passing of a young woman with whom you had just exchanged a few words,” he expressed. “Her innocent countenance continues to haunt me, and I wish her family to know that she held them dear. She departed this world peacefully, gazing at their photograph. My heart aches for her loved ones eagerly anticipating her return.”

Ms Kaur, a student in Melbourne with aspirations of becoming a chef, tragically succumbed to tuberculosis, preventing her body from being repatriated to India. Consequently, her grieving parents have applied for visas to travel to Australia and bid their daughter a final farewell.

According to her family, Ms Kaur’s health had rapidly deteriorated in the preceding months, leaving her struggling to communicate and devoid of energy, as reported by Metro. Australian authorities promptly initiated contact tracing procedures the following day, alerting those identified as potential contacts at risk.
