Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Stabbing South Korea’s Opposition Leader

A man in South Korea has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for stabbing the country’s opposition leader, Lee Jae-myung, in the neck earlier this year. The incident took place at an event in the city of Busan, where the assailant approached Lee asking for his autograph before carrying out the attack.

The knife-wielding attacker expressed his desire to prevent Lee from becoming South Korea’s president, leading to the violent assault. The Busan District Court found the man guilty of attempted murder and a violation of an election law, resulting in the 15-year prison sentence.

Following the court’s verdict, both the convicted individual and prosecutors have the option to appeal the decision within one week.

The attack occurred just before South Korea’s parliamentary elections in April, during which Lee’s Democratic Party and other opposition parties secured a significant victory over President Yoon Suk Yeol’s conservative governing party.

The court described the assault as a serious threat to the country’s democratic processes, undermining public trust in liberal democratic principles. The assailant, who had harbored animosity towards Lee due to political differences, had reportedly planned the attack in advance and had stalked the opposition leader at multiple public events.

While the court did not disclose the identity of the attacker, reports suggest that he had recently become a member of the Democratic Party. However, the ruling People Power Party clarified that he is not currently affiliated with their party.

Lee, a former provincial governor known for his outspoken nature, narrowly lost the 2022 presidential election to Yoon, a former prosecutor. The intense rivalry between the two candidates and the subsequent political tensions have exacerbated South Korea’s existing conservative-liberal divide.

Recent surveys indicate that Lee remains a popular figure and a potential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, while Yoon is legally prohibited from seeking reelection.
