A Freeport man, LeAndrew T. Adams, will face a jury on July 16 in Whiteside County court for the alleged sexual assault of a young girl in Sterling in April 2023. Adams, 21, was charged on April 13 with attempted predatory criminal assault of a child, attempted criminal sexual assault, two counts of battery, and unlawful restraint. The charges were later amended on May 4 to include two counts of predatory sexual assault, the most serious charge which carries a potential sentence of six to 60 years in prison.
If convicted, Adams could face a minimum of four to 15 years in prison for the first two charges, two to five years for the next two, and one to four years for the last charge. He would be required to serve at least 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole. Adams was arrested on the evening of April 12 in the 800 block of West LeFevre following a report of an attempted assault.
According to the charging documents, Adams allegedly grabbed the young girl as they walked past Washington Elementary School, covering her mouth and attempting to assault her. The girl managed to escape and seek help from an adult on the playground, who then called 911. Adams was apprehended by officers after a brief chase and was identified by the victim as her attacker.

At the time of his arrest, Adams was on probation for theft and has ties to Chicago and Gary, Indiana. He is currently being held in Whiteside County Jail awaiting trial, which is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on July 16.
