A spate of shootings and other violent incidents over the extended Fourth of July weekend has resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals, with 11 of the fatalities occurring in Chicago. Additionally, dozens of people have been injured across the country, as reported by authorities.

The Fourth of July is historically known as one of the deadliest days in the United States. Last year, a series of shootings around the holiday left over a dozen people dead and more than 60 wounded. The year before that, a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade near Chicago claimed the lives of seven individuals.

Violence and mass shootings tend to escalate during the summer months, with more people gathering for social events, schools out of session, and rising temperatures, as highlighted in a report by AP News.

Multiple Deaths in Chicago; Beach Closures

Chicago witnessed a staggering toll of 11 deaths and 55 injuries from shootings over the extended July Fourth weekend, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. This included a tragic mass shooting that claimed the lives of two women and an 8-year-old boy.

Police reported that eight individuals were wounded in Chicago’s Little Italy neighbourhood shortly after midnight on Friday. About 90 minutes later, another shooting in the city’s Austin neighbourhood left six people injured. Preliminary investigations suggest that these separate incidents involved an exchange of gunfire between two individuals who then fled the scene.

Recent violence at the popular 31st Street Beach on Lake Michigan prompted officials to close the beach early each night through the holiday weekend as a precaution due to recent stabbings and shootings in the area.

Violence in Southern California

In Huntington Beach, California, two individuals were killed and three others were injured in an attack that occurred shortly after an Independence Day fireworks show ended, as reported by the police. A suspect was arrested following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon on Thursday night.

Arrest Made in Niles, Ohio Shooting; Tragic Loss in Cleveland

In Niles, Ohio, Police Chief Jay Holland confirmed that a 15-year-old male was in custody after a 23-year-old male was fatally shot at a Fourth of July party at a residence on Thursday night.

In a heartbreaking incident in a Cleveland neighbourhood, a 10-year-old girl lost her life to gun violence. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether the victim was deliberately targeted.

Fatal Drive-By Shooting in Philadelphia

A drive-by shooting in Philadelphia on Thursday night claimed the life of a 19-year-old man and left six others wounded. The injured individuals, including four juveniles, were transported to hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this time.

Incidents in the Boston Area

Following Fourth of July celebrations in Boston, three separate shootings occurred, resulting in one fatality. The fatal shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. in a park near the city’s South End neighbourhood. At the same time, three other individuals sustained gunshot wounds in a shooting in Jamaica Plain. Another shooting at a gas station left a victim with life-threatening injuries.

Additionally, a 17-year-old male suffered a stomach wound in a shooting at a condominium parking lot in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, around 9 p.m. on Thursday.

Tragic Shooting in Hartford, Connecticut

In Hartford, Connecticut, a woman found shot in her car early on Friday was pronounced dead at a hospital. The victim, identified as 23-year-old Shamyria Williams, was believed to have just left a Fourth of July party by her relatives.

Earlier incidents involved a 19-year-old man who arrived at a Hartford hospital with gunshot wounds and is currently in critical condition. Another man in his 20s was also treated for gunshot wounds after being picked up by an ambulance while attempting to walk to the hospital. Police do not believe the two shootings are connected.

Albany, New York Shooting

Police in Albany, New York, responded to a shooting at a residence where six teenagers were injured during a large gathering. The victims, all males aged 16 to 19, were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Evidence of gunfire was found in the yard behind the residence and in the street.

One of the teenagers, who had been shot, managed to flag down officers along a street shortly after the incident.

Violence at Tampa Nightclub

Four individuals sustained injuries in a shooting outside a Tampa adult nightclub early on Friday following an altercation between the club’s security guard and two men. The suspects drove their car to the front of the Pink Pussycat Lounge, where one of them shot the security guard. The guard underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition. Three other individuals, unrelated to the altercation, suffered minor injuries. Both suspects have been arrested and charged with multiple crimes.

Earlier on Thursday, incidents in Cleveland and Yellowstone National Park resulted in fatal shootings, including a police officer serving a warrant in Cleveland.

High Point, North Carolina Incident

In High Point, North Carolina, a shooting at an unofficial fireworks display led to the death of one individual after a large crowd gathered in the city’s parking lot. The victim, identified as Keith S. Lynch, 32, lost his life in the incident. Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances that precipitated the shooting.
