LCBO employees in Simcoe County and Muskoka have commenced strike action following failed negotiations between the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) and management.
The OPSEU represents a substantial number of Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) workers, including those at the seven LCBO outlets in Barrie.
This strike marks the first time that LCBO workers across the province have collectively walked off the job, impacting operations at all LCBO locations in Ontario for the next two weeks until July 18. Following this period, only a select few stores will reopen with reduced operating hours over the weekend. The specific locations set to reopen have not yet been disclosed.
It is important to note that online ordering with home delivery remains unaffected by the strike. Furthermore, other alcohol retail outlets such as The Beer Store, LCBO convenience stores, licensed grocery stores, bars, and restaurants will continue to operate as usual.

The union, representing over 9,000 LCBO workers, asserts that their primary concern is combatting the expansion of privatization within the alcohol retail sector.
OPSEU/SEFPO President JP Hornick stated, “Doug Ford is prioritising the interests of his affluent associates. This is evident in his decision to allocate significant public funds towards expediting the privatization of alcohol sales, thereby diverting a substantial portion of the LCBO’s revenue to CEOs and major retail chains like Loblaws and Circle K.”
In response, the province’s Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy expressed disappointment in the union’s resistance to granting Ontario residents the option of purchasing pre-mixed alcoholic beverages, such as coolers and seltzers, from grocery and convenience stores.
Additionally, OPSEU is advocating for wage increases and the provision of full-time employment opportunities, highlighting that 70% of LCBO staff are employed on a casual basis.
