Accident – Death – Obituary News :

In a heartwrenching incident in Everett, Massachusetts, two Department of Public Works employees are being hailed as heroes for their quick thinking and bravery in rushing into a burning building to rescue a young girl trapped inside. The heroic actions of these individuals have garnered praise and admiration from the local community.

The dramatic events unfolded on Wednesday when the two on-the-job Everett Department of Public Works employees noticed smoke emanating from a triple-decker on Hancock Street. Without a moment’s hesitation, they sprang into action, alerting nearby firefighters to the dire situation.

Upon arriving at the scene, Everett firefighters were met with challenging conditions, but it was the quick actions of the two city workers that set the stage for the rescue operation. Jesse Winocour, one of the heroic individuals, recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “I told him, ‘Stop the truck.’ He stopped the truck and we both ran out, ran into the building, kicked in the doors and dragged everyone out.”

Despite their valiant efforts, Winocour and his colleague Jason Papa were unable to reach the third floor where they learned a toddler girl was trapped. Winocour described the intense conditions, saying, “We couldn’t make it all the way in. Too much smoke, too much fire. We tried.”

As Winocour and Papa were forced to retreat, an Everett firefighter, identified as 26-year department veteran Captain Jay Lewis, bravely made his way to the third floor, despite the hazardous conditions. Lewis eventually emerged with the unconscious girl, with both he and the young girl in need of urgent medical attention.

Neighbour Connie Garcia, who witnessed the emotional scene, described the tense moments, saying, “She was unconscious, so she apparently wasn’t breathing. I was so scared to see her. He couldn’t do anything else. He just dropped his body to the floor.”

The heroic actions of these individuals saved the lives of several building residents, with more than a dozen being displaced as a result of the fire. Sue Decarney, one of the displaced residents, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Thank Christ he did because otherwise, it would be a tragedy.”

Despite the traumatic events, Winocour and Papa remain humble, deflecting praise and attributing the rescue to the courageous firefighter who risked his life to save the young girl. Winocour emphasised, “He went up there and saved her. He’s the hero. The fireman saved the little girl. He’s the hero.”

Thanks to the swift actions of all involved, the young girl was successfully revived and taken to the hospital, along with the firefighter, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, as the community reflects on the heroic efforts that saved lives in the face of adversity.
