A recent graduate of Steamboat Springs High School in Colorado tragically passed away after an apparent electrocution incident in Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, on Thursday. The victim was identified as 18-year-old Jesse Hamric, the son of the school’s principal, Jay Hamric, and his wife Heidi.
The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office received a call early Thursday morning reporting a possible drowning at the lake, located about an hour southeast of Roanoke. According to reports, two individuals jumped into the water to aid Jesse when they realized he was in distress, only to feel a shock themselves.
Despite their efforts to rescue Jesse and perform CPR until paramedics arrived, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The two individuals who assisted in the rescue were treated at the scene and later released.
An autopsy will be conducted by the medical examiner to determine the exact cause of Jesse Hamric’s untimely death. Steamboat Springs High School issued a letter to students and families confirming the tragic loss of Jesse, who had graduated earlier this year.
